Single mom gets her baby boy through IVF

I wanted to share my story with you. It’s the short version (I know you’re probably thinking this is short, ha ha ha) but I wanted to share and thank the Sher Institute for everything!!!

I am a SMC (Single Mother by Choice). About 3 years ago, I had to undergo emergency surgery as it appeared that I had a torsion, my tube and a fibroid had a fight and my tube lost. The tube wrapped around it so many times that it died and took half of the left ovary. While going through the MRI, they were afraid that I might have cancer so they sent me the same day (during a snow storm) to a cancer specialist who set up surgery for me two days later. My surgery was over 6 hours long and I had 3 surgeons. The next day when I woke up in the hospital, my wonderful OB, Dr. Susan Malley, just looked at me and was like – it was the best case scenario, you don’t have cancer, but we took the left tube and half of the left ovary (originally they were going to take everything out). And then she strongly suggested that I get pregnant within the year if I wanted to have a child because with all my cyst and what happened on my left side this could happen on my right. Please keep in mind I am single and 42 years of age – not a great scenario to getting pregnant. But my OB gave me some cryobanks to look at and I picked out a donor and went to what was supposedly the best of the best – this hospital did two rounds of IUI on me and neither worked.

Then my OB suggested Dr. Tortoriello at SIRM. So I called and spoke to the office manager who started me over the phone on BC and made an appointment for me in Oct of 2009. Dr. T came straight out and told me – my history, my age that my chances were low that I might have to try several times and that he would not do IUI on me, only IVF. I told him I understood and let’s proceed. December was my retrieval and then transfer – he put all 4 embryos back into me. I told him I didn’t want to be octomom. He laughed (in his coolness) and said at your age we are hoping for one to stick. 2 weeks later (New Year’s eve) I found out I was 2 weeks pregnant. Aug. 28, 2010, at the age of 43 I gave birth to the most wonderful little boy. He is smart, strong and so handsome – I can’t believe how lucky I am to be able to tell people I am his Mommy. I wanted to share this with you because I had so many things against me yet the people at the NY office always made me laugh and I always kept faith and hope. Thank you so much for my perfect miracle.
