Give Yourself The Best Chance At A Successful IVF

IVF, like any other medical or surgical procedure, is best done when the health of the patient is maximized.  When you know that you will be undergoing IVF, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle.  While this should be the case anyway when attempting pregnancy, IVF puts an additional strain of stress, medications and a surgical procedure on top of the standard pregnancy process.  Once should prepare several months ahead of time if possible.  A healthy diet, regular exercise program and weight loss when indicated can all be of great benefit.  Other chronic health issues such as diabetes, thyroid disease, asthma and seizure disorders should all be fine-tuned prior to the process. It is important to discuss these issues with your doctor on your first visit to give yourself enough time before the process begins.

Supplement, Alternative Medicine and Your IVF Process

Supplements can also be helpful, but make sure you discuss this with your doctor before proceeding with them.  All patients should be on a prenatal vitamin, mainly for the Folic Acid, prior to embarking on the IVF process.  Antioxidants are also helpful.  Some of the more popular ones include Acai, Resveratrol and Pycnogenol.  These are good for both men and women. Antioxidants clear toxins and free radicals from the body, thus creating a healthier environment for pregnancy.

The literature now supports the use of acupuncture to improve IVF success.  It is important to find an experienced practitioner for this.  Ask around.  You will want to find someone who has experience with IVF patients. Acupuncture can also be a great way to reduce stress.    Be cautious about herbs, as some of these can contain hormones that might be counterproductive to your IVF medications.  Again, discuss this with your doctor.

In my opinion, stress can also play a negative role in our health.  While not easy, it is important to try to do your IVF cycle when you are in a reduced stress state, perhaps when work is not so burdensome, or in the summer months.  Stress reducers such as yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, acupuncture, message and acupressure can all be helpful.

There is a lot one can do to optimize your body for the IVF process.  Take time to do this.  It can really help.
