Hello to all,
Over the past three decades, I have met and consulted with well over a hundred thousand couples seeking treatment for diverse reproductive issues involving infertility and pregnancy loss. The universal thread that I have encountered is people’s hunger for information when they’re facing such situations. Many times, the response I get from patients after discussing their case in depth with them is “I wish I would have understood that before my first (or second) IVF cycle!” Unfortunately, many people undertake their treatment with what they realize later to be very limited information on both their own diagnosis and what their treatment options are.
Therefore, I have created this blog to be, first and foremost, a source of meaningful and substantive information for those who are considering or currently undergoing fertility treatment. It is my wish that you’ll find something here that will give you additional insight, knowledge, and ultimately, hope.
If you have been through IVF or other treatment before and haven’t been successful, don’t give up! And don’t take one opinion (including mine) as ultimate truth. Seek as much information as you can get and use it all to make an educated decision on what’s best for YOU.
Hopefully, this blog will provide some information and opinions here that will contribute in a useful way to your knowledge base. You can also access many pages of educational information on our website at haveababy.com. The site also hosts a discussion forum that allows you to post your questions to any of the Sher Institute physicians – including me.
Here are some of the topics I will be expanding on with relevant facts and personal opinions in the upcoming weeks:
- Micro-IVF vs. “Mini IVF” or “Clomid IVF”
- Embryo Selection: Comparing Microscoping Grading, PGD, CGH
- The Viability of Egg Freezing/Banking
- Immunologic Factors in IVF (Causes and Treatment)
- When (and When NOT) to Use IUI
- Risk Sharing IVF Financial Plans
These are just few of the topics that I’m asked about most often. I’ll be adding to these in the future and will seek to cover a full range of relevant topics.
Best wishes on your journey from infertility to family.
Geoffrey Sher, MD

It’s about time you did a blog, Dr. Sher! Looking forward to your insights.
Copy!
Way to go Dr Sher! This blog will be an invaluable resource for people wishing to know more about their situation. It’s also high time all the mysticism of infertility treatments/conditions is dispelled. I wish more doctors would follow your lead and involve patients in their care. You’re one in a millon.
Thank you!

any sense for why eggs would have many polar bodies and appear obviously abnormal?
anything i can do/not do to improve the quality of my eggs, i'm 36, and a good responder but most are abnormal and don't grow past day 3.
if you've already written anything on this subject and can direct me to a link or such i'd appreciate it.
thank you
Hello Dr. Sher,
I have completed two unsuccessful cycles to date in 2009, March and May. How much time should I allow before my next cycle?
Thank You
The reason is a chromosomal aberration called polyploidy.
Please read the blog I posted yesterday (Part1/2) and the one I will post later today (Part 2?2). This will explain the factors affecting egg/embryo quality and how we address them.
Thanks for your comments
