I am constantly in awe of the manner in which my patients endure the impositions, demands for compliance and the many indignities they are confronted with in the course of undergoing infertility evaluation and treatment. Frankly I don’t think I could do it….But then again I have children (and grandchildren) of my own and I know what this means to me. So I could not possibly put myself in the position of infertile couples who on a daily basis confront the disappointment brought about by an unfulfilled promise of parenthood. Now consider the enormous emotional, physical and financial commitment that most couples must make to even get started on treatment.
The first responsibility of the infertility doctor is to instill a realistic sense of hope in his/her patients. In order to get through the process there is a real need to “believe” in the possibility of a successful outcome. Without such hope and belief, not only would it be less likely to succeed but it would no doubt be far more difficult to endure.
I was discussing the arduous “journey from infertility to family” with my son Darren, and his business partner Steve Carlson who are both songwriters and musicians. They became so inspired that they proposed writing a song that could capture the human drama that accompanies infertility. About a month later Steve and Darren presented me with a song with lyrics so poignant and inspiring and with a melody so beautiful, that I immediately commissioned them to produce “I Believe” which has now become SIRM’s theme song.
“I Believe”, sung by Steve Carlson and Rosalee (Darren’s wife) truly plucks at the heartstrings. The lyrics are applicable to many human struggles but are especially relevant to couples who are trying to have a baby. Frankly, all of us at SIRM were so inspired by “I Believe” that we elected to have it transformed into a music video. Please view the “I Believe” video for yourselves below, or on the SIRM website, http://www.haveababy.com/. Then, if possible, send it on to others. We also welcome your feedback by posting your comments on this site.

What an absolutely beautiful song! I have to admit that I did cry through the entire thing, but that is just cause to listen again
As for our physicians giving us HOPE, absolutely! We put so much FAITH in you all. My RE at Fertility Associates here in Memphis has been wonderful. And I am happy to report that 2 dear friends are new patients of your clinic in Dallas. One started the IVF process on Tuesday and the other goes in for a consult this Friday. I will be cheering these ladies on to success!

Thank God my doctor was able to be hopeful for me when I had no hope myself. That was more important than any treatment could have been. Now, 9 weeks pregnant. Thanks for the beautiful song.
Thank you Paige!

Here we go, incomplete but not alone
Both of us together down this long and winding road (and you say)
I want to build a perfect circle, make something beautiful to call our own
And I believe that there’s a change around the corner
And in a world that’s out of order we still have time
I believe in the love that’s all around us
And as the arms of life surround us it all seems fine
I believe…
Let the seeds we’ve sown live on forever once they’ve grown
And inside our happy home they will see
There’s a lot of things that we will do, sacrifice anything for you
Promise anything, knowing you will be.
Oh and I believe that there’s a change around the corner
And in a world that’s out of order we still have time
I believe in the love that’s all around us
And as the arms of life surround us it all seems fine
Oh and I believe…
I believe it’s coming our way, that change is coming some day
It’s just a matter of time…
